This Mother's Day, Make Every Mother Count

A mind-boggling statistic: across the globe, a woman dies every 90 seconds from complications related to pregnancy or childbirth. 90% of these deaths are preventable. Lest you think maternal mortality is just a problem in the developing world, think again: the US ranks an abysmal 50 of 171 countries reporting data, behind every other developed nation.

Think that's a problem? So did Christy Turlington. Spurred into action by her own childbirth complication, which was easily addressed in the New York hospital where she gave birth but is worldwide the leading cause of maternal death, Turlington followed the lives of four pregnant women across the globe for a documentary called No Woman, No Cry and created a companion organization, Every Mother Counts. Watch Christy Turlington describe her mission on Charlie Rose.

This Mother's Day, make every mother count. Donate your old phone to be recycled for a health care worker, buy the Every Mother Counts CD at Starbucks, watch the film No Woman, No Cry on the Oprah Winfrey Network May 7th.
